Some stories take a lifetime to earn. Mine took exactly 80 years.
I spent 35 years teaching drama in Waterloo, Ontario — which mostly meant convincing teenagers that yes, they did have something worth saying, and yes, the rest of us wanted to hear it. I also served as president of KW Silver Stars and worked with community theatre groups for more years than I can accurately count. Theatre people are my people. Always have been. Here’s what all that time on and around the stage taught me: story is the thing. Not the costumes, not the lights — the story underneath. The moment when something true lands in a room full of people and everyone feels it at once. That’s the whole game.
The Winkleys: A Test of Magic is my first novel — Book One of nine, if I have anything to say about it. It’s a children’s and YA fantasy adventure series rooted in Celtic legend, Ontario history, and the genuinely magical landscape around Elora’s Grand River gorge. It follows two kids, Sarah and Jason, who discover that the past is not nearly as finished as everyone told them. I launched it the same year I turned 80. Best birthday present I ever gave myself.
